Idiots and their Ipods
Let these guys use their ipods in class... they will miss what the teacher is saying and do worse on the exams... increasing your chances of getting a nicer curve.... i went to school in boston and everyone would walk to class with ipods... they would have to cross the trolly tracks... people who were too into their music would either get blasted with the air horn or hit.... its a darwinian survival of the smartest and most environmentally aware!
I would not allow a student to sit in on one of my classes while listening to music. If they arent there to listen and learn they dont need to take up a seat in the classroom. As for exams... thats ridiculous, I would consider it cheating plain and simple, they can prove otherwise to the dean of their major school.

So this is another Scot type of thread. A rant about Ipod users. I'm writing this from marketing class. In about a class of 20, there are usually about 3 people who listen to their Ipods during class.
In the business class I had before this, we were taking a test, and this idiot shows up late, and is blasting music through his Ipod during the entire length of the test. It was loud enough that I could hear it 20 feet away!!! Afterwards the teacher talked to him about it, and told him not to do it again.
Seriously, why the fock can't someone live without their Ipod during class? Aren't you taking the class to learn something? Isn't that music at hearing-damaging level distracting you from learning?

I wear my bluetooth headset when driving so that I don't have to LOOK at the phone to pick it up - purely a safety thing. I wont dial anyone while I'm driving, only accept incoming calls. I leave my headset in my car and connect/disconnect with my phone during my getting in/out of the car routine.
as far as the iPod - mine is currently broke, but that too was really only used in the car - I'll listen to it at work in my cubicle as well, but that's becuase I refuse to download anything on to my work computer out of respect. Listening to iPods whilst hanging out with friends = no no, taking tests = no no, and generally being a rude idiot = no no.

i think it's just overall silly for us to criticize the things other people do that we either don't agree with or don't understand because the bottom line is that all of us do things that some of the people around us do not agree with or do not understand.
If people think it's acceptable to talk on their cell phones while holding up a line at the bank, or at Starbucks, it will only get worse.
There is a guy in my office who plays his music so loud some time that it is heard all the way down the hallway. They person who used to share an office with him, would politely ask him to turn it down, and the guy playing the music would get pissy. Who is in the right?
Bottom line is this: There IS such a thing as right and wrong. There are shades of grey, but there are ALSO black and white, and somethings REALLY are black and white.

Listening to the iPod while hanging with friends is just retarded.
Checking your e-mail on your blackberry while someone is talking to you is pretty high on my list of new-wave rudeness.

also, checking e-mail or text messages on a cell phone while someone is talking to you (without checking or excusing yourself first) is really rude as well
with new technology comes new rules about what is rude and polite, the more networked our world becomes the more important it is to establish boundaries.
just my .02
Yeah! I might be the one to snap on some foo' rockin' their iPod or blackberry while I am trying to talk to them, so they should be more polite to avoid the smackdown!
BTW -- I just got my new iPod shuffle in the mail today.
