Sounds to me like you hate your job. It's good, but the next one might be just as bad? If you hate it, take the pay cut and leave for something you realistically think will be more enjoyable. I guess some people can be happy "working for the weekends" and if you are then that's not so bad. I spend more time working than I do anything else, so it's damn well going to be something I enjoy.

I rather get paid $100k to work at a job that i dislike. Rather then $50k to work a job that i enjoy. That is just me, work is work.

I'm in that category and I'm pretty content. Sure the job has bad days, sometimes long hours and work on the weekends and having to put up with a bunch of crap, but what job doesn't? People who make 30k a year complain about their jobs, and so do people who make 100k and even 500k a year...

Personally, I worry about money very much, even though I have enough saved up that I shouldn't. I'm always afraid that one day I'll end up without a job and I'll loose everything that I have. I'm saving pretty aggressively, and I'm always thinking that in a year I'll be able to live a little, but it seems like that never comes...

Keep thinking that way. It will motivate you to save more and more.

My parents thought like that, but never did anything about it. In one year my dad was hospitalized for 5 months, lost his job, and they were foreclosed on. They went from making $160k collectively, to $40k collectively.

Happiness is very subjective. While happiness to sahtt is complete financial freedom, maybe to someone else making a decent living, having the nice apt in the city, and a nice car to go with it, while not over exerting themselves is happiness to them. I don't think it's fair to judge people because their way of life is different from your view of "ideal" and "smart"
You and the previous poster did not read carefully. I don't post much on s2ki anymore because few here take the time to comprehend a post before posting about it themselves (common on forums, not picking on s2ki).

What I said was if* you hate your job and are doing it just to maintain a lifestyle without the money you obtain from that job going towards a greater cause, it's a waste IMO. Pretty childish to skip straight the where I said the M3 and loft were not enough to generate happiness-that's out of context. Almost any work, no matter how miserable, could still be the right choice if there are meaningful externalities involved (saving $$ to travel the world, purchasing a ranch, retire by 45, etc.).

If you love your job and only save 500$ a month it could still be worth it, even in the long run. That's why asking if someone is "happy" with their job is almost pointless, it's more of a philosophical discussion on whether doing a job you do not enjoy could still be worth it.

Like some others have said, most days I'm happy...it's relatively easy because I like what I do. I'm a performance/capacity analyst and enjoy my work but like everyone else, I have bad days. I am thankful for my job and have very little debt. I have one small car payment and my house will be paid for in about 4 years...long before I retire. I have been offered more money and turned it down because I like what I do and I like the company I do it for. I would take less money to stay where I am.

I usually like your posts and think they're very well thought-out and "smart".

But get off your high-horse for once and see how other people may take what you said differently. It had nothing to do with lack of reading comprehension. I'm not you, therefore I took what you said in a different context.

Unless he had a ton of money to being with, I would never be able to pass that up. I would at least take the $3M a year job for a few years...then when you're pretty much rich enough to never have to work again...take the cop job. Maybe it's just me
