I'm worried about my kidneys
could they diagnose kidney stones with just a urine test or is a blood test necessary. I'm afraid of needles.
Now my whole right leg hurts, so I'm hoping its just back pain related and not the kidneys.

OK, I guess I should chime in.
I have End Stage Renal Disease, aka kidney failure. I've had it 5 years and I'm on dialysis so I am somewhat an expert here.
It sounds like kidney stones. The condition is acute and you'll either pass them or they will handle it some other way, usually through blasting them into small chunks. You need to go to a doctor for diagnosis. I believe that urine MIGHT be used, but they may be able to do an Xray too. Urine would probably have the trace materials that make up stones, though.
Bottom line, don't start worrying as it won't help. If it is stones, you're gonna be fine. It probably won't be pleasent, though. You can live without kidneys, but it won't come to that for you.
I'm waiting on a transplant and have to follow a special diet. I also have to limit fluids as I don't piss. I've been doing it for 5 years and I'm used to it, though.
I'll repeat...go to a doctor.

Thanks for the info. I was wondering if drinking alcohol would have any effect in causing or during kidney stones.
I will go to a doctor tomorrow.
I don't know the answer to that, sorry. I'd imagine it doesn't unless drinking is excessive.
I think the stones are potassium-based salts. I'm sure the doctor will give you diet/habit recommendations on preventing stones in the future.
