If you call an Indian a "Native American" he is going to kick your ass before you can say "hey that's my arm. give it back." Columbus did not call Indians Indians because he thought he was in India, he referred to them as "En Dios" which means "People in God" but through the bastardisation of the language it came to be pronounced Indian.
If you ask the American Indian Movement (AIM) what they think of the term Native American they will tell you to stick it up your ass. There were 20 million native people (Indians) in what is now the U.S., Canada and Mexico. When the Europeans came over they wiped a lot of them out. There are now less than a million native people left. To actually incorporate the name "American" into a bullshit politically correct label is an insult to the native people of this land.
When we defeated Japan in WW2 we didn't change the name to Japamerica or Jamerica, we helped them rebuild and left them with their dignity. But I guess we only do that to foriegn enemies, not the people we slaughter in the name of money and land on what is now U.S. soil, which was stolen from the millions of natives who were murdered. You call an Indian a Native American and you take away his dignity. I know, I am part Indian and damn proud of it.

rallykid, that's very interesting. I never herad the En Dios thing before, but it makes sence.
Anyway I think Native American is good. Every knows this continent as North America. The earliest known human settlers were the people that where here when the Europeans came.

Here's a quick one for you guys who think Indian and Native American are interchangeable...
If a Mexican is from Mexico, if a African is from Africa, where is an Indian from? C'mon...it's not that difficult.
I correct people all the time. My dad is an Indian. My mom is an African. I am American. Our ethnicty is Indian. How is a Native America, Indian...in ethnicity or otherwise?
This has nothing to do with being PC. WHen peole ask me what I am, I tell them, American. When they repeatedly ask me what I am, I answer the same...until they ask me what country my mom or dad. If they happened to ask about my mom, they don't believe that ethnic Indians were used for colonization of Africa by the English.
PC or not, I am an American....not an Indian-American, an American-Indian...etc. If my birth-certificate states I'm American, I'm American....as are the aborigines.

While I am very respectful of Indian people, I am a little cautious of personally embracing the "En Dios" phrase.
While I think the phrase produces a respectful and noble image of Indians, the internet reveals conflicting information. One source says Columbus' journals refes to Indians by the respectful and honorable phrase "una gente en Dios".
The opposite extreme says that Columbus never wrote this and instead referred to the Indians as "indigente"(a Spanish word for for the desperately poor and the source of our word "indigent") as Columbus perceived them as "poor and naked" and wrote that they quite suitable for converting to Christianity.
While I do not find the second definition to be quite as comforting, I find the second definition to be a little more logical, especially given the subsequent attitude and (lack of) that the European people displayed for the Indians and their land.
I don't know if anyone has wondered whether the word "Indian" came from the word "Indigen", the Latin word for "Native" (Latin was required of seafarers of the day, much like English is now required of airline pilots).
