Indians.....

It seems to me these indigenous tribal cultural groups labeled themselves long before the Europeans decided to classify them.
Would it not be appropriate to refer to them by their tribal names, such as Lakota, Mohawk and so on?

I completely agree. It wasn't the English vocabulary that called India, India or China. However, it was the English vocabulary that labeled the indigenous as 'Indians'.
Going by tribe names is nothing different than calling me an Illinioisan, calling Nin009 a Coloradian, calling a Chicago, a Chicagoan, a Milwaukee a Milwaukeean, etc.
(BTW, did you catch my use of cities and states that are named after tribes?)

They were laughing when the told me about it the next day. They said they looked at each other and smiled. They said they never thought of themselves as "Indians". They were Utes!
Yutes....LOL!
Luder, my bf is from India. He earned his citizenship not long ago...despite being here for 20 years, he now proudly says "I'm an American now."
In the conversation, the subject of him being summoned for jury duty came up...at which my friend said
"Oh yeah, you are an American, now."
My bf ended up not serving jury duty...when answered if he had any prejudice towards law inforcement, he answered yes, and flashed his U.S. Dept of Homeland Security badge. He was immediately dismissed from duty.
My friend later said..."You got out of jury duty? You are a REAL American, now!!"

Political correctness is hogwash. You are what you are by the name used. It is all in the way you think about what was said. It is o.k. for a african-american to call themself a Niger or black but if a white guy sais it oh, $hit watch out.
