Intel Prescott Coming Soon!!!
In my experience, building a near top of the line PC at any particular time will let you play any game that comes out over the next two years. (Only go for an absolute top of the line if you're interested in bragging rights among your nerd friends.
)
My two year old Athlon XP1900+ with GeForece3 Ti500 still plays everything I need it too, and it's way overkill for spreadsheets and web browsing. I'll probably look into getting a new machine whenever DOOM 3 gets released. (Then again, I'm not into heavy video editing, software development or scientific computing, which are all other good reasons to upgrade more often.)

The only game I'm playing much of currently is Unreal Tournament. The funny thing is my roommate still has an Athlon 700 running @ 800, and a Voodoo5 and his computer gets a higher frame rate on that game than my P4 2.4 Ghz laptop (to be fair my laptop is just a generic 64 MB shared-memory video card)
When I do my new desktop it WILL be fast

For Doom 3, you'll want at least:
3 GHz P4 or 3000 series AMD XP or XP-64
GeForce 4 or above or ATI 9800 or above
1 GB Ram DDR 2700 or above
Decent mouse
Decent keyboard
19 inch monitor
Beer fridge full of Jolt and drawer full of snacks within easy reach
72 hours uninterrupted play time (who needs sleep?)

I'm a true gamer, so I know the importance of caffeinate soda and snackage ^_^
