Interested in a small handgun.
HK's are the "VW's" of the gun world. Affordable and good quality, they are well made and they have few user accesable parts.
(plus I have one I'll sell ya, USP .45 full frame, variant 1 - $495).
Of course like anything, price plays a part in recomendations. I currently LOVE the Bill Wilson .45's ( www.wilsoncombat.com ) but get ready to pay. I can tell you that the price IS worth it if you shoot the thing on a regular basis.

SIG P226 or P229 in 9mm is a good gun that won't let you down when you need it. If you need something with a little more stopping power then they make the P229 in .40 S&W caliber as well.
If you're going to be carrying a gun for personal defense, don't be cheap. If you think it's your life on the line, and it better be if you're planning to carry a firearm, then buy the best you can't afford. Period. Cheap, good looking and poserific have no place in self-defense.
If your needs are more for sport and target shooting then you have more leeway in terms of "style."

I have a Glock Model 30 .45 ACP. I feel the 9mm is an insufficient cartridge. The Pope took 6 9mm rounds and survived. He most likely would not have survived one .45 round.
The .45 ACP knocks people down, the 9mm does not.

Never fired one, but they sure are sweet designs. I think they renamed them Smith & Wesson 99 or something for the U.S. distribution...originaly Walther P99.
