competition is abounds.

htc-diamond
sounds like a great phone too (they made the original hp pda's). no n american introduction yet. does anyone know if the t-mobile rumors are true, they will be carrying it? otherwise its ~$800.00 hardware goodness = removable micro sd memory. software bad, microsoft mobile.

iphone
i hear tom tom gps street maps application will soon run on the iphone. i am thinking this could be a viable pda replacement but i still need:
-hand writing recognition
-functional journal app like phatnotes
-gps street maps with navigation voice prompts
-skype phone

i so hate to trade down, i have had a pda for years that ran lots of these applications.

If you are with sprint then this is something you might want to consider. Samsung instinct, it releases this june 20th.

I'm kinda interested in this and staying with sprint (I still have a year left on my contract). I'd get the instinct and do the simply everything plan for $99. Just thinking about the price of data service for the iphone and then cell services charged on top of that, I'd probably be paying more per month.

Since Apple added character recognition for Chinese so you can scribe the characters, I really hope this feature is expanded on so I can input English text without having to peck. With the SDK, I think its entirely possible someone would write some apps to do this.

This is definitely true. I priced out my current plan with sprint and its more with AT&T. 35>100+

Just found this online. It gives the majority of pricing/activation/return, etc.. details that people are interested in.

There will be upgrade pricing available too if you are eligible or already have a g2 iphone at any time.
Upgrade prices, meaning the $199 and $299 subsidized prices, are the ONLY ways to get a 3G iPhone right now. All 2G iPhone users automatically qualify, and others must satisfy existing AT&T upgrade policy criteria.

From the memo: "AT&T has not determined the price of the 3G device for non-qualified upgrades." In other words, it's not available in that way currently.

Also: "There will not be a "no commitment" price for the iPhone 3G."

Possibility - purchase a 3G iPhone, activate it under a new number, keep it for 30 days, cancel the service, pay the ETF (early termination fee), keep the now-disabled phone, put in an active 2G iPhone SIM and end up with a working 3G GPS enabled iPhone at 2G data rates. (That's assuming the 3G iPhone can be made to work with a 2G iPhone SIM. This also assumes that the ETF isn't prohibitive - anything up to $200 is okay with me personally, making the $199 iPhone into a $399 device, which is what I expected it to cost in the first place.) Also at that point, you can give/sell the 2G iPhone to somebody else to activate under the old $20/mo plan.

For the Canadians out there:

http://canadianpress.google.com/article/AL...xxDCekSvvebaAzg

iPhone 2 coming to Canada? I'm confused, kind of looks like mixed news because it's US pricing for a product that will be sold by an exclusively Canadian provider, and it comments on the need for increased speed to 3G...

We'll see if it holds true, but Rogers is my provider so maybe I won't have to deal with an unlocked version.

I'm not that familiar with handsets, but I wouldn't think that would work. 2G & 3G use different types of authentication, so I'd assume a 3G phone would need a 3G SIM (with 3G authentication info on it).
