iphone 2
I love my 2G iPhone. I'm probably going to get the 3G one but I'm wondering how much will the back plastic hold up over time. The metal on mine is doing well, a few scratches but nothing major. If it's the same plastic as some of those early gen iPods, it will be a scratch magnet.

I'm not that familiar with handsets, but I wouldn't think that would work. 2G & 3G use different types of authentication, so I'd assume a 3G phone would need a 3G SIM (with 3G authentication info on it).

It won't work with Verizon since they utilize CDMA technology. The iPhone currently only works on GSM platforms (at&t). Also, T-Mobile and other regional carriers use GSM platforms, but the iPhone is "locked" and can only be used on at&t's network unless you have your iPhone unlocked - but still, some applications may not work...

I thought all iPhones had 3G SIM cards? There was some debate as to why when the original iPhone was Edge.

Possibility - purchase a 3G iPhone, activate it under a new number, keep it for 30 days, cancel the service, pay the ETF (early termination fee), keep the now-disabled phone, put in an active 2G iPhone SIM and end up with a working 3G GPS enabled iPhone at 2G data rates. (That's assuming the 3G iPhone can be made to work with a 2G iPhone SIM. This also assumes that the ETF isn't prohibitive - anything up to $200 is okay with me personally, making the $199 iPhone into a $399 device, which is what I expected it to cost in the first place.) Also at that point, you can give/sell the 2G iPhone to somebody else to activate under the old $20/mo plan.
1. Once you cancell your contract, you must return the phone before they cancell it (since you got a discount with a new 2 year contract). They will check the notes to see if you returned the phone.
2. Putting the old iphone sim card in the new iphone will not work, because the new iphone is not registered to that sim card, that is, unless you unlock the new 3g iphone.
3. As far as using the old data plan with the new 3g iphone data plan, thats not possible unless you figured out #2.

if you ask at the ATT store, they will unlock it for you.
I hope I'm on the same page as you, but what makes you think att is going to unlock the iphone for you?
