Looks like you did your homework, but few things to keep in mind:
1. Once you cancell your contract, you must return the phone before they cancell it (since you got a discount with a new 2 year contract). They will check the notes to see if you returned the phone.

2. Putting the old iphone sim card in the new iphone will not work, because the new iphone is not registered to that sim card, that is, unless you unlock the new 3g iphone.

3. As far as using the old data plan with the new 3g iphone data plan, thats not possible unless you figured out #2.
1. If you cancel more than 30 days after activation, you pay an early termination fee, and keep the phone. If you cancel within those 30 days, and return the phone, you get charged noting. Plus, I think you get a refund of your iPhone purchase price, minus the standard Apple 10% restocking fee.

2. It works if you put an old SIM into a new 2G iPhone, so it's reasonable to speculate whether it'll work when put into a new 3G iPhone. No unlocking required, just activation via iTunes.

This new iphone will make the old ones obsolete. I expect to see plenty of cheap old iPhones to be on ebay soon.
I would argue its the exact opposite. You can unlock the 2G iPhone with no issues therefore making it much more popular for those without att. Check your local craigslist. People here in Phoenix are offering $150 for used 2G iPhones

You're looking here?
http://www.wireless.att.com/cell-phone-ser...honeCenter.html

That's only for the old version of the iPhone. The $59.99 plan you're looking at is $39.99/mo voice + $20/mo data and 200 SMS.

The new 3G iPhone coming out next month will be the same $39.99/mo voice, but data will be $30/mo, and 200 SMS will be an extra $5/mo.

I don't think AT&T has posted the new plan on their comsumer website just yet, since the new iPhone won't be sold until July 11.

Here's a breakdown of the common wisdom, though:
Whatever voice plan you want ($39.99 being the cheapest)
$30.00/mo for 3G data (mandatory)
An optional $5/mo for 200 texts (I think it's $20/mo for unlimited texts). If you don't select a text plan, you'll got charged twenty cents for each received and sent text.
