Off-topic Talk Where overpaid, underworked S2000 owners waste the worst part of their days before the drive home. This forum is for general chit chat and discussions not covered by the other off-topic forums.

It's "than", not "then" (pedantry)

I correct grammar on a level consistent with the skill of the writer. You, for example, overuse commas. I wouldn't dare say that to most of the posters on this board because of the poor quality of English they already show.

You exhibit enough skill for me to nitpick the tiniest details. However if someone said
does you, perhaps, went to go to fishing with me and jimmy, tumaroe?
bitching about comma useage is absurd! Complaining about any of their language is absurd since obviously they cannot write, regardless of the fact they they were born and raised in our nation's capital.

Perhaps it is my experience as a programmer that has taught me to read poor English sufficiently. Computers are much more sensitive to poor input than humans are. As a programmer one of my jobs is to take the poorly thought-out ideas of beancounters and suits and express them in extremely logical and structured languages.

Maybe I have a better capacity to adapt to the needs of poor communicators than most. Maybe I am completely wrong and am a fool. In any case, it is more time consuming to correct a fool than to learn to understand one.

On the other hand, chances to debate with competent communicators are far and few between! I like this thread.

I agree with you that most of the change in the English language is not pushing us towards clearer communication, but the diversity of American culture tends towards chaos in many aspects of society including but not limited to lingual differences between individuals. Do I embrace the change? I most certainly do not, it makes my life more difficult. Do I care enough to fight the change? Any time you argue with a person too stupid to listen (let alone write clearly) you have no chance of winning. The only choice left to me is to grin and bear it

Feel free to correct all my mistakes.

Thanks for the tip. That's a question of style rather than error. In my opinion commas separate logical entities and aid ease of reading. If everything runs together it's hard to see where one phrase ends and another begins. I don't remember a rule of grammar that says you can't use more than 2 commas per sentence .
