Default The Job Market

My company... TopCoder... has been having a hard time looking for talented software developers, I would imagine that the market should be flooded by these due to the burst back in 2001...

What is your take on this? Where did they all go? If you know of a talented developer, please let me know...

Although my experience in IT is limited, I'm surprised to have met a lot of old dogs or people who really haven't kept their skills up to date. I can't imagine much demand for someone who only knows Cobol.

When I applied for my current job, almost three years ago, there were over 300 applicants.

A similar position is now open, and we got maybe 40 resumes in over the first week.

Either the market has opened up a bit, or many of the people who were laid off just left the field.

I know a guy who was a Project Manager (a bad one) at Merrill Lynch who currently works for UPS loading trucks in the morning, and as a bank teller during the day.

Yep, it's starting to turn back. I am getting a call a week from recruiters and they're starting to pay better...

Well, the government subsidises EVERYTHING now, so pretty much anyone can get away with not working...and when they do work, they're not exactly motivated. I hope I don't offend anyone here, just venting.

I've got two openings on Monster.com right now (don't salivate, very specialized engineering) and I can't believe the number of shotgun resumes I'm getting. These morons don't even bother to read the job description! I can't believe the number of crappy resumes I have to slog through.
