Classic "bait and switch." You could not put a deposit on the car because the car, if it ever existed, was already sold when you inquired. The whole point is to get you in to the stealership and get you interested in something else that they do have.
There are many places that do this, and the practice will get worse if the economy does not improve.

Idk but personally I would be glad somebody else got the car. I wouldn't feel good buying from a royal prick like that. If the salesman acts like that to a potential customer, just think what kinds of problems or w/e they are hiding from you just to get a sale. Plus you'd have to deal with them again if anything came up.
