Is it my imagination or are people just posting without reading the responses.

I DON"T THINK ANY ONE MENTIONED PROTECTING ASSETS EXCEPT THOSE THAT ARE AGAINST JOINT ACCOUNTS.

The people that favor joint accounts find that it makes life easier to have multiple accounts.

[QUOTE=NFRs2000NYC,Mar 26 2006, 11:25 AM] You can file your taxes any way you want....but if you have 1 million in your account, and your wife has 100,000, and you get divorced, you are not protected from her getting a portion of your money, although it is in YOUR account.

I just think that keeping separate accounts is a sign of mistrust. If you're going to keep separate accounts, might as well sleep in separate beds, eat separately, etc. I can see people wanting to protect their own money in a divorce but why even think like that during a marriage? Why even get married in the first place if you don't trust your partner? I just don't get it.
I think that keeping joint accounts is a sign of mistrust. If you're going to keep joint accounts, might as well put GPS trackers in the cars, never go out separately, etc. I can see people wanting to know what their partner is doing in a divorce but why even think like that during a marriage? Why even get married in the first place if you don't trust your partner? I just don't get it.

I hope that through my sarcasm (it's meant in fun ) you can understand my point - this isn't a situation is mistrust or secrecy, it's a very easy budgeting tool. Having joint accounts or separate accounts neither have anything to do with trust.

Do they also put little stickies with name on their own food in the frig.....and sleep on separate beds......?The only reason someone would do this is that they plan on getting a divorce....

This is entertaining anyway........ it still seems strange to me...... but to each their own... reminds me of my dad always telling my mom "this is my house" (they got divorced...doh!)...

Just because they maintain seperate accounts doesn't mean they don't have joint accounts as well.
But if they have separate accounts, what money goes into a joint account? Do they have a set arrangement of a certain amount per paycheck?

Yep, that's certainly one way of doing it.
