Kidney Stones
I think I read that they can also be caused by repetitive dehydration. Something about being dehydrated causes all the minerals to form a microscopic cluster, which over time and repeated dyhydration, grows until expelled. The article, if I remember correctly said they can be common in distance runners and atheletes who do not stay adequately hydrated.

all I know is kidney stones are a man's worst nightmare...it would be like worse than giving birth for a man...
I had my first kidney stone about 3 years ago. It started out like a cramp in my side, and got worse and worse. I thought I was having an appendicitis attack, but it turned out to be a kidney stone. The pain was the worst I have ever felt, it took 4 units of morphine before I stopped yelling. I went to the hospital, where it finally workied it's way to my bladder.
About 2 weeks later, at work, I went to pee and felt something really bad - the stone got caught half way down, if you know what I mean
I had to stand by the water fountain and gulp water for about 30 minutes, until I could get enough pressure to blow the stone out. When it did, what a relief!!! It looked just like a small raisin, and was about the same size too!

I had kidney stones a few times. There are two types. Calcium stones and citric acid stones. I have excessive amounts of blood calcium for whatever reason and it gets deposited in my kidneys. The first time was a year and a half ago. I woke up in the middle of the night with a sore back that felt like I pulled a muscle. It progressively got worse until I felt like someone had stabbed me in the back with a rambo hunting knife and was carving up my insides. The pain and cramping is so severe that you get sick and throw up constantly too. It's the worst pain imaginable and I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. So now I drink water like a fish and take cranberry supplements to acidify my urine so the stones end up like sand and don't get too big.
^ wow. sorry to hear about your experience. so if cranberry juice is supposed to minimize the development of kidney stones, then i think i will begin to drink them on a regular basis. i'm still curious to know if calcium supplements can lead to a more rapid development of kidney stones. i take calcium supplements daily because i do not consume enough of that mineral via food...at least i don't think so...
