Lasik eye surgery...
Your vision has to settle ,ideal no changes in two years. Royalties on equipment range about $325-$400 per eye. Top level doc charges $5,000 in California (things cost more here) for all laser treatment , laser to cut the flap, laser to zap you.
my contact lens prescription was at -4.75 and -6.75 prior to the surgery. afterwards, i'm 20/20 in my right and 20/15 in my left. my proceedure was done at crystal vision in nyc back in early 2001 for $4k and i have nothing but praise for the procedure.
with the advancements in lasik since 2001, i'm sure the procedure is much more accurate and the healing time is much shorter now.. from what i can see, it looks like the prices have dropped significantly as well.
do it.

Is this just the standard lens replacement they do for cataract surgery?

No. This is a totally different lens. The cataract lens is a single focus. This is implanted, as they do with a cataract lens, but it will flex with you eye muscles to focus as your normal lens did when you were younger. You may want to check this link for a better explanation. This is where I had mine done.
