let's take a moment to remember our lost brothers and sisters

Yeah, and how long did that last? We are the most hated country on the planet. Even some of the countries who sent messages of condolences on 9/11 were privately celebrating what happened to us (Libya?). Makes me sick to my stomach. Like right now. The French and the Germans are sticking their tails between their legs again and running for the hills re: Iraq.

I don't know if the US is the most hated country on the planet. But one of the issues is that the US government (and note: I do not use "America", "The U.S." or "the Americans" or any other sweeping generalization) has wasted a lot of goodwill both before and after 9/11 by taking unilateral action despite proclaiming to be after a "partnership" with its allies. Well, "partnership" to me means taking other people's feelings and opinions into consideration and to compromise, and not just when it is convenient. If you want to be part of the international community, you have to work within commonly accepted structures and processes -- like the World Court, the United Nations, international treaties. My understanding is not that the French or Germans (or the Canadians for that matter) are "running for the hills", but rather that they want to get authority through the UN Security Council for any military action. And contrary to what the domestic American press is trying to suggest, I have not seen any proof offered, yet, linking Iraq to Al-Quaida or that they are advanced in their nuclear arms program. If that proof exists, the government should present it and they'll most likely get the green-light after some more diplomatic efforts. But until then, they should remember that might does not make right.
And before any flame-war erupts let me just add that this is not meant to diminish the victims of 9/11 or any act of terrorism for that matter. Obviously there is no justification for any such action.

I could not let September 11 pass without contributing my huge and heartfelt THANK YOU to all active and former military and law enforcement personnel, firefighters, EMTs and all others who routinely put their safety on the line for the rest of us.
You help protect our freedoms and I owe you all a tremendous debt of gratitude. God Bless America.
