look behind you when you backup
Bad news concerning the bike. At least it wasn't serious. I don't recall my insurance rates going up when I totaled my Nighthawk several years ago. I hit a truck muffler sitting in the middle of the highway while changing lanes. It clipped the back wheel, bent the rim and released all the air, resulting in a tank slapper at 65 mph in morning traffic. I was not determined to be at fault.
The dealership "totaled" the bike, but I slapped the wheel from my wife's Nighthawk on it and rode it home. I was able to get it back on the road with a few hundred dollars worth of parts, and then got $2000 trade-in on my CBR600F4. I think everybody should own an S2000 and a CBR!

People are constantly amazing me...
Tonight I was walking to my car after some shopping when I see a lady start her M5. As I'm gawking at the car, another car comes around the corner, sees her with her reverse lights on, and stops. She begins backing up... keeps going... keeps going... SMACK! Hits the stopped car. She gets out and tells him "I didn't even see you". The whole time she was backing up, she was looking ahead of her.
I ALWAYS look behind me when I'm backing up. What's wrong with drivers today?!?

I drive a motorcycle (Suzuki Intruder) and can vouch for the stupidity of many drivers. I've been run off the road twice, and lost track of the near misses. Luckily, the run offs were easy to anticipate (1/4 mile clear view of an idiot driving to kill).
My only truly scary experience was doing 75mph on 101 north, popping over a slight hill and finding a sedan cruising 75mph south...in my lane (ie, on the wrong side of the median)! No idea how I switched lanes in time. To top it off, the b(i)tch flipped me off as she went by!!!
Anyway, glad to hear you are OK, sucks about the damage.
When you ride a motorcycle, drive like everyone is trying to kill you...because they are!

in the miata I've had to backup twice in emergency situations like the one guy on the bike here.
one time I ended up getting hit. the guy backed up, in a mini truck, thinking he saw a good parking spot, I put it in reverse and backedup as fast as I could and while I was backing up the other guy was too and he backed up just a bit faster than I did and ran his truck up my car, then proceeded to the parking spot. he didn't even realize he had put his back bumper up on the front of my car. I did get his insurance info and his insurance company was quite bogus for a while. they didn't return calls and wouldn't answer their phones - I pulled some strings to make the guy contact the insurance company personall where I worked at the time and it was finally resolved many months later. my luck with insurance companies - blah, they are the mob, I swear.
