Love
Tough to watch. I had my dog put down when I was 23 and couldn't help but cry. Similar situation as this (in pain, old, having a hard time leading a normal life) but still made it tough to let him go. Moved on quickly, though (easier to do when newly married and moving around for internships constantly) and would love to get another dog someday...
We've had to euthanize four dogs, and some number of guinea pigs (I've lost count), and have had more guinea pigs and rabbits die from who-knows-what.
For me, the worst one was PD, our seven-year-old blue merle collie who was the most gorgeous collie I've ever seen. (We've owned four collies - two tri-colors, one sable-and-white, and one blue merle. Before PD, every blue merle I'd ever seen was nothing short of ugly.) In 1993 we moved to New Jersey, and PD was allergic to the entire state. The vet we used there gave him prednisone, which ended up destroying his liver. (We didn't know that we could have given him Benadryl.) The rest of the family moved back to California in July, 1994, but I had to stay in New Jersey for three more months. I planned to fly to California for a weekend visit about a month after they'd moved back home. PD died of liver failure one week before my trip home. I was crushed.
One of these days we're going to lose one of the horses, probably my wife's mare Valentine first (she's 29). That's going to be devastating.
