marijuana

Hmm, interesting...I'd never heard that before. In what form/context is THC prescribed? And I disagree that it's BS to say that patients are being deprived of medicine. I have an uncle who is in the final stages of his life due to advanced cancer, and his every waking moment is a living hell. He's in severe pain all the time, but the painkillers he has (oxicodone and morphine I believe) do not effectively deal with it, while also making him incredibly nauseus. I think both of those of opium-derivatives, though I could be wrong, and my impression is that marijuana would solve or at least greatly reduce both symptoms. I even urged him to go find a dealer and smoke up, but he's a very conservative guy and I doubt he will heed my advice. Heck, I could be wrong about the benefits of medicinal marijuana, but it's worth a shot IMO. Too bad it's illegal.

it is horrible that your uncle is in pain, and he sounds like someone who needs a consultation from a chronic pain specialist. There are many options from ensuring that he is on adequate dosages of opiates, that they are long enough lasting, and that medications are being delivered to the sites where he is having pain. There are many adjunctive therapies that are not opiate based ( drugs called membrane stabilizing agents, centrally acting nonnarcotic agents, and others) The trade name for THC is marinol. It is used as an appetite stimulant, and as an antinausea agent, primarily. Some use it as an adjunct for pain- I believe it may be useful in that context, but is never appropriate as a primary analgesic (painkiller) as there are much more effective agents. Your uncle sounds like he needs someone agressively treating his nausea (for which THC can be useful, among many agents) as well. There are also nondrug theraies, like implanted nerve stimulators, which help many cancer patients with pain.
I have ZERO faith in modern medicine to assist with my chronic pain. Been to so many doctors, so many x-rays, they never see anything wrong so they just tell me to live with it. It's a crock of shit, so I no longer go to modern medicine for help, I find my own solutions that work wonders and allow me to continue being a productive member of my community.

Umm, is everyone a medical doctor/pharmaceutical chemist? Letting someone else (with more knowledge) decide which ones are "okay" is absolutely vital. Otherwise everyone would be filling their bodies with all kinds of herbal supplements and crap like that that has had no research done to find out what it does to our bodies. Oh wait, that already happens
. Putting something in your body without *anyone* knowing if it's okay is what's stupid.

Yes, the FDA and USDA may not approve them, and there may not be any modern clinical trials performed but several thousand years of human use says a lot about a substance or compound to me.
Drugs are a double edged sword for certain, marijuana or otherwise, but a little common sense goes a long way. Too bad most people lack it.
