My bad. Thanks for clarifying. I feel
now that I wasn't able to detect that.
I know a couple of people who when I asked them a similar question--if they would continue to smoke when they have a family, etc. All of them told me they would. I'm not a pot smoker, but I don't think that it is the worst thing to do in the world.

I smoke daily as well, and yes, there are plenty of successful older folks who also smoke. They simply hide it better so that peers, colleagues, family, etc., don't find out. Marijuana does not impair one's ability to lead a productive life as the bullshit propaganda would suggest. For older folks, it's just more important to keep this kind of stuff a secret. It would be career suicide for your typical CEO to come out and say he smokes weed.
People from all walks of life smoke weed, and as most smokers eventually discover, one of the worst kept secrets of marijuana is that countless people smoke it, and you can almost never tell who. Contrary to popular belief, they aren't all living in the gutter begging for drug money or picking soda cans off the beach.
As with most anything else, marijuana can be destructive in the wrong hands or beneficial in the right hands (although I smoke it recreationally it has also helped my gas reflux problem immensely). It's nowhere near as destructive as the propaganda wants us to believe. Attitudes on this are starting to change, and I think we'll see people come around in the future, but it will still take considerable time. Until then,

A programmer isn't going to hurt anyone by making a coding mistake but a forklift operator could seriously injure a coworker if stoned (or day after buzz) on the job.
I'm not saying smoking is bad, as I participate recreationally on occasion. However as a programmer, I know that programmers don't always just get stuck with creation of trivial bullshit. Software can very well be an issue of life or death.
IMO the most relevant question is whether smoking marijuana will lower the quality of code written by the programmer. My opinion and personal experience is that it does not. It's no more of a concern in my mind than having coffee-fueled programmers...
Of course, the bigger issue is how the individual person responds to marijuana. As with all drugs, people have different tolerances and react differently. It's not far-fetched to suggest that some people can be significantly impaired by marijuana, while others are able to function completely normally.
People who smoke frequently tend to fall into the latter category. These people live ordinary lives just like everyone else. Because the general public is so hung up on the image of the marijuana user as a cracked out bum, they never suspect these normal folks of being smokers.
On the other hand, the guys that make the headlines, and thus reaffirm the image of the weed smoker as a crackhead bum, tend to be those who can't handle the drug and probably shouldn't be smoking it in the first place.
As with just about all else, I say go for it if you can handle it, but if you can't, then cease immediately and stop giving people who do it a bad name. Such responsibility is no different than that which comes with driving a sports car.

Regarding programming though, I'm not so much a fan of coding stoned as I am of debugging stoned. Stoned coding is okay, but not too different from sober coding... But man, when you've got a problem in your code, and have spent hours tracing through it to no avail, it's amazing how one or two good rips of herb can open up your mind (ok mine at least) to potential culprits.
