I was just asking a friend in the area about this this morning- he said that Microsoft didn't seem to be offering anything nearly enough to make them interested... Also he said that Google is talking about the IPO as a more realistic path, but no specific plans are made yet.

There's rumors like this all the time...especially about Microsoft buying out this or that company. To date, almost none of those rumors have been true.
There's also been a lot of speculation over the past few years about when Google is going IPO and why they haven't done so already. The current word is that it's finally going to happen next year, but that's still just a rumor, albeit one that's looking more believable.
