Now you are getting it Mike. So for instance when people ask me how was your easter. I just tell them i don't celebrate easter. People generally don't have a clue and are being nice so I don't jump down their throats. I don't however ask everyone, how was your diwali. I do however, if I am sure of their culture, wish people happy whatever appropriate to their cultures.

[QUOTE=s2000raj,Apr 29 2010, 10:48 AM]No, I'm only saying that it's as wrong as it is for him to wish everyone a Merry Christmas.

Good for you. (Sincerely, not sarcastically.)

You and I will have to disagree about "separation of churdh and state". It's not, in the sense that most people use it, a constitutional doctrine.
Won't necessarily have to disagree as I concede that you are accurate, moreso than me. Of course there is always subject interpretation.

Such as the second amendment.

Mike, it's hard I believe for people who weren't an oppressed minority to understand the significance of such things.

It's different when you are a child and told by everyone, you will celebrate our holidays, the government vacations will be on those days. Additionally at public school you'll be in our holiday plays, learn and sing our holiday songs.

Also we'll ridicule your religion and your billion armed elephant god. We won't stop making comments like this as kids. When we are 40 years old we'll still make comments like this.

Since we are the religion that is the most prevalent if you complain or try to take away the dominance of our religion we'll ridicule you more. Additionally since Sunday is our Sabbath we'll make sure you are forced to have stores close early that day.
Interesting, thanks for the perspective. It sounds like a cross is a small thing in and of itself, but it's the whole "slippery slope" issue--where does it stop...

My mother and father are living in Hawaii on the west side, and as caucasians, they are the minority. It's interesting. As a military family, we lived in a small town in Mississippi about a decade ago and were sometimes appalled at the racism they saw against blacks. Now my mother tells me they've become the minority and are seeing the other side of the issue, although it's not as ugly as in Petal, MS.

I actually knew people in my church in MS who were KKK members. And the church would throw them out for that, but they kept quiet... it's a mess in ignorant small towns.

But I've never been on the receiving end of anything but a few rip-off-the-rich-white-guy deals and affirmative action penalties. Nothing like true hatred or strong offensive bigotry.

My good friend's wife (who is white) lived in Hawaii. She experienced some of that too. "Go home Haole!" When she'd go to non tourist local hangouts. It's sad because she's one of the most culturally open minded laid back people.

You lived in Petal? I lived in Hattiesburg when I was really young. Then I moved to Jackson in 3rd grade.

I just ask, "How was your weekend or any holiday that may have passed?" That almost always gets a different answer or holiday, but im always interested to learn what holiday may have passed from any given religion.

Side-note: This thread is a one for the books, a great example of how discussions or debates should (and sometimes do) take place here. Good core group of people in the OT!

Most definitely! We have a solid core of mature and educated individuals who can be open minded with such a meaningful topic.

Im still waiting for Magician to pull out the grammar stick and beat someone

You forgot a period at the end of your sentence. You also forgot the apostrophe in "I'm". Let the beating commence!
