Why are manholes round?
Thats an easy one. Its so the manhole covers won't fall in. No way to put a bigger circle through a smaller one.

I had a similar experience with a research company. They wanted me to travel 200+ days a year, in a suit, working 60-70 hour weeks. They dropped this on me so I stood up, shook their hands and said "let's not waste anymore of each other's time... I have one suit for weddings and funerals and it's going to stay that way"

If you rotated the square cover 45 degrees and put it on its edge, it would fall through. Round is the only shape that would not, I believe.

No it wouldn't! only if the square lip was the same size and the cover didn't have any width! I understand the concept. that the length of the square is the length of an equalateral triangle but if the second square is the same size and the lid has any reasonable width to it then it won't fit, if the second square is smaller with a lip it won't fit ever!

The issues of falling through the hole are part of it. Also force is equally distributed when a weight is put on top of the circle. A square would not distribute the weight equally around the whole of the...hole.

Mine wasn't to hard. Took me a minute to answer...

Your an LE Officer and you see a fugitive thats wanted by the US Marshals Service (for killing 2 US Marshals about an hour ago) and you go after him to apprehend him. While chasing him you end up on foot running onto and near a beach. You already know he has killed 2 officers and he is considered armed and dangerous. As you run near and under a pier you hear a girl scream that she is drowning and you give a slight glance to your right and see a woman struggling in the water to stay afloat. You have no radio on you or cell phone at this time (this is a huge what if but they asked.)

What would you do? Continue to pursue the wanted suspect that has just killed 2 US Marshals Officers or do you go and try to rescue this woman? Also, if you choose to rescue the woman in distress how would you go about doing it since you have your gun belt on (with your loaded weapon) and your armor. If you choose to continue your pursuit of the suspect how far are you willing to go and what would you do about the drowning woman that you just saw?

You have two minutes to think about both your answers.

In my head I wanted to shoot the suspect in the leg then strip down, empty my weapon into the sand, then jump in the water to save the drowning woman.

However, after reading into it I went the common sense route which was to let the fugitive go and go after the woman by leaving everything on the beach. Eject the magazine and cycle the one round in the chamber out of the weapon, throw your clothes/jacket over the gear, and go save the woman.

They said the most important thing is loss of life. You have to save and protect life at the highest priority, regardless if this fugitive has just shot and possibly killed to Police Officers. We can always go after the fugitive another day. That cant be said if the woman drowns. So saving the woman gets first priority.

Shoot the fugitive, unload any remaining bullets in the sand. Jump in the water and save the girl. Then get a nice handy for saving her life (if she's hot).
