I heard the manhole thing was a microsoft question too....
but if it they weren't circles.. think of how many more tax dollars we would have to pay the unions to spend time figuring out why the covers don't fit and how to rotate them .... instead of a round thing that is standardized.. people would prolly find a way to have different dimensions on them, then someone would change them.. and you'd end up with 20 different sized manholes.... good grief

I had a similar experience with a research company. They wanted me to travel 200+ days a year, in a suit, working 60-70 hour weeks. They dropped this on me so I stood up, shook their hands and said "let's not waste anymore of each other's time... I have one suit for weddings and funerals and it's going to stay that way"

The issues of falling through the hole are part of it. Also force is equally distributed when a weight is put on top of the circle. A square would not distribute the weight equally around the whole of the...hole.
