Default Motor Trend's Car of the Year

This year, Motor Trend selected the Ford Thunderbird. Here's what industry veteran Peter M. DeLorenzo has to say about the Motor Trend award:

Motor Trend's "Car Of The Year," Or, Do We Have A Marketing Opportunity For You!

In one of my previous advertising lives, I had the perverse pleasure of witnessing the Motor Trend "Car Of The Year" scam first hand. I'm hearing groans from our readers

I always knew this award was worthless, but I didn't realize it was this bad. I think Motor Trend's a worthless car magazine, so this doesn't surprise me. I remember when the Caprice Classic won this award a while back. That was when I realized that any magazine that would name that car the Car of the Year was not worth reading.

I do know that to even be eligible it has to be a new American car. That pretty much wipes out most of the good cars sold here.

I AM SO GLAD THAT SOMEONE FINALLY BROUGHT THIS SCAM TO LIGHT!!!!!

I was in Barnes & Noble's on Friday night, when I saw MT's January 2002 issue on the shelf. . . I picked it up looked at the cover, and said to myself "How much do you want to bet that the Thunderbird gets their COTY award. . ."

And sure as SH*T. . . The winner is: The Ford Thunderbird!!!!

Needless to say, after taking a quick look at the new 745iL (sweet car), I put that POS back on the shelf. . .

I don't mind if on ocassion they pick a car that is obviously out-classed, but due to its styling wins the award (i.e., the PT Cruiser, or Beetle). . .

HOWEVER, you can't pull this scam year after year, and expect to have any credibility. . .

Here's a short list of some of the competitors. . .
ES 300
SC 430
RSX Type S
Audi S8
Audi S6
M3
Q45
WRX
SLK32
Audi A4
Altima. . .

Now, does MT REALLY expect us to believe that the T-Bird (@ $35K+) is a better value, better car, and offers better quality than all of the above!?!?!

This scam is the exact reason why I don't buy that rag. . . Its not worth the paper its printed on. . .

Every car you have listed here is an import. The COTY has to be a new American car. There is a separate import car of the year. Still, the award is crap and accurately reflects the magazine that gives it.

Mark-

That's no longer true. MT compiles domestics and imports together for their annual car of the year award.

I got that edition in the mail a few weeks ago and laughed my ass of. What a joke.
