Motor Trend's Car of the Year
>>>The COTY has to be a new American car.<<<
Mark,
Effectively (and unfortunately), you're right. . .
MT is so biased (even more so when you take into account Palmateer's info) that it basically comes down to what American POS they feel like naming COTY. . .
The only cars in recent memory that were actually worthy of a COTY honor were the 1998 Vette & possibly the 1999 Chrysler 300M. . . But, can MT honestly say that there has NEVER been an import that was a better value/car than what's listed below??. . . It makes me sick. . .
From the MT page, a history of the COTY. . . Can you say discrimination?!?!?

By the way, when I first got my license (1992) I was given my grandmother's 1977 Volare. . . THERE IS NO WAY IN HELL THAT POS SHOULD HAVE EVER BEEN GIVEN A Car Of The Day AWARD, much less COTY. . .
And, a good friend of mine briefly owned a 1980 or 81 Citation. . . COTY my A$$!!!
Like I said before. . . It makes me sick!!!!

C&D calls thunderbird the new champion of the door dinger with a 55" door.
It looks ok in the photo, but it looks very ugly in person. But PT Cruiser is still the ugliest production car. Thunderbird might have to fight Z3 for the close second. Perhaps Aztec should have a shot at that crown as well.

wow - good list! at least the 1985 vw gti won... Can you believe the #1 selling cars from honda and toyota have never won - the camry and the accord. There are some serious lemons on that list...can you image someone trying to sell their used 1983 AMC / Renault Alliance and them telling you it was the coty? Do you add or subtract value?
Well I'm no fan of MT and this story sounds likely. I'm not really impressed with the Drudge-like website source though. Can anyone fill me in on this guy's creds and why he might be so bitter about what is essentially normal, everyday co-branding?
I'm not arguing that this is not despicable or deceptive; only that it is common Capitalism at work.
BTW, what he's described also sounds like what's required to be the Neiman-Marcus car.

OK listen closely...
The 1971 Chevy Vega won ...
From that point on this award has no crediblity ...
NONE.
Take my word for it I owned a 74 Vega GT
as sorry to admit that as I am...
I guess the good news is there is always hope........
