Anything ever driven a 91 on MR-2, how does it compare to the S? What do you guyz think of it as a second car?

Our second car (actually first because we had it first) is a 91 MR2 Turbo. Fun car but no comparison to the S2000. Shifter absolutely sucks by comparison. Suspensions is loose and sloppy also by comparison - partly due to 132,000 miles of wear. Makes a nice second car, has a lot more storage room and is good in the snow.

If I live in U.S, I would probably go for something more friendly in the snow rather than another RWD.

 

The MR2 was my dream car in the very early 90's (my middle school years).
I remember seeing one in the mall in it's introdution year and my friends and I probably spent 1/2 hour drooling over it.
I regret I never had the privilege to drive one (Larry....wink, wink).
Although its technology / performance may be a little out-dated, it's still one hell of a looker imo.

 

Sorry but I have to totaly disagree with laster I owned a '91 MR2 just before this car and it was a really great car. I never noticed anything wrong with the suspension or shifter. I also think that the S2000 has more storage room. Granted, the S2000 far surpasses the MR2 in all catagories but that doesn't mean that the MR2 sucks in any way. I guess I just have fond memories of it. I thought it was a great car.

 

It still is a great car, and my 91 n/a keeps the smiles on my face until my S2000 arrives

if you are shopping for a 2nd generation MR2 (year 91 and on), you may want to look into the 93-95 years. toyota revised the rear suspension with the 93 models to make it "safer". Although some purists prefer the 91-92 suspension. I have never owned the second generation MR2 so I can't comment on it's handling. Also, the 93 models have improved brakes. The Gen I and II MR2's are great cars. I've never noticed balky shifting or flexible suspensions. But I suppose any car if driven hard, long enough would start to suffer.

They are good daily drivers, get good gas milage and are pretty cheap to fix.

However they do not make good snow cars. Buy something else as a beater if you live in a snow region.

 

The only shifting problems I know of for either the gen 1 or gen 2 MR2s is that some early (85-86 years) MR2s had the 5th gear pop-out problem. It would jump out of 5th gear. My 87 has never had this problem. My only complaint about the shifter is that the throws are long, not like the S or the Miata. As for snow-worthiness, I have never ever been stuck in snow in 13 years. Drove to Vermont on a ski trip once. Granted, we have had very little snow in NJ in past few winters but I feel very confident driving the car in snow (and that's without snow tires). I don't know how the 2nd gen MR2 rides in the snow.
