my dog got hit by a car.....
excel, please just bow out of this thread because you're not making things any better for anyone. What do you do in your spare time go to funerals and play devil's advocate saying "damn fatty should've skipped maccas if he didn't want a heart attack".....?
Whether you're being callous intentionally or not, the fact is you are - as enough people have pointed out. Not cool, bro.

...so when i do get a dog, what kind should i get?
It really depends on what you're after. Different breeds have different personalities and different owners are partial to certain characteristics based on their own personalities and lifestyles. I personally loved everthing about our french bulldogs. They weren't too big that you couldn't take them anywhere but they weren't girly either. They were loyal and they really enjoyed cuddling up with you and while they aren't the smartest dogs out there you can train them well enough and they are great as pets. By time I get home from work and the gym I usually just have dinner and chill so I didn't/don't want something too hyperactive.

I already did earlier, same goes for you. I never said anything like this guy was responsible, only that the poor dog doesn't know any better than to stay out of the road and rather than eveyone ganging up on the dude that hit the car to be a little realistic. I'd never ever let my dog go into the road ever. He was worth too much to allow that risk.
Sometimes you just can't control certain situations though. Dog bolts through door......leash breaks....you built a tall fence but he decides to dig under it. OTH, some people just don't care and let their dogs and/or cats run loose, which is irresponsible.
Labradores are notorious for staying "puppies" for about 5 years. Although they are intelligent, this usually means they get bored easily and like to destroy things. My sister's one is a prime example, and likes to dig up any new plants put in the garden....mind you a bit of training may help the dog too.
I got my rottie-x (with a tail) from the local RSCPA (pound) when we was around 8 months old. He is very friendly
I prefer a dog to be something that doesn't fit in a handbag and get beaten up by neighborhood cats.

Yeah, that sucks. I too hit one at night in a rural area once. There I was, "manly hunter and fisherman", about ready to cry over a stray. I also watched my Lab get hit by a car right in front of me when I was young. Just goes to show that they are not completely predictable or controlable....just enjoy the time you have with 'em and spoil them rich.
