My week with the new neighbor....
So I live with my girlfriend in a duplex type house. We live downstairs and there is an apartment upstairs.
We move in and the first day the guy whose been living there for 2 years already bangs on my door decked out in harley gear trys to tell me that I have to park my grand cherokee and my "crotch rocket" on the grass because he likes to have friends over. MIND YOU he had a huge 25ft boat parked in the driveway and his car beside it. So I parked the bike in first and my jeep behind it. Only taking one car spot.
He has this girlfriend whose 24yr old cracked out son got beat up on our ajoining front porch by the harley guy.
BTW - Harley guy name is Ron but he calls himself hogman. His gf name is Lorie.
Hogman ends up moving out about 2 months ago. We never had an arguments after that one about the bike and jeep and how its impossible to ride a sportbike uphill in grass.
Him and Lorie get a house together. Fast foward to now. Lorie moves in last week, IN THE SAME APARTMENT UPSTAIRS. I find out that shes living there because he kicked her out and threw some of her stuff in the front yard.
The first night shes here, she was here all day long and then decides to move furniture from 11:30pm until the guy helping her stomped off the porch at 7:07am. I called the landlord to bitch. He said oh no, wont happen again.
2 Nights later, she comes home in a drunken rage to find that her 24yr old son and 2 blacks came in, held her 16yr old son down while they robbed the whole place upstairs. Nice.
That makes me uncomfortable because what am I supposed to do when these guys hold my gf down while Im at work.. AND not to mention I have like $50k of stealable stuff in my apartment at any given time.
So we end up talking and finally introducing ourselves as her neighbors. It turns out that Hogman has been sitting in the alley beside the house every morning from 7 - 7:30am so he could watch Lorie go to work. Boy is that settling. We talked about how if we see hogman around here that were calling the cops and how shes so scared that hes going to come and attack her.
Last night,
Im watching tv in our living room. Our front door is in our living room. All of a sudden I hear stomping on the porch and it sounds like her front door got kicked in. I hear alot of screaming and someone slammed up against our wall(the other side). The front porch light starts flickering and then I hear another slam. After the slam, no more flickering. At this point I open the front door, all I hear is a little boy saying, NO NO STOP!! DONT DO THAT, NO!
Needless to say, I thought someone was being attacked, I called the cops. They came, it ended up being a 13yrold and 16yrold kid there just playing with eachother.. Weird but whatever. I called Lorie after I called the cops, before they arrived, but she couldnt hear me because she was at the bar.
She comes home and calls back 10mins later. Asked if I called the cops, I said yes. From this point I couldnt even get 3 words in.
Shes screaming into the phone how I couldve gotten her and her gfs kid taken by social services and I dont understand what its like to have kids because Im 19. She didnt even let me explain what I saw/heard. She ends 10mins later by saying, I done now, I have to explain what just happened to the kids. I said, You cant even do that, you werent here and you wont let me tell you what happened. Or even explain myself.
During the whole call, Im asking her.. Ok well when hogman comes here to attack you and I know it, Ill wait till you answer the door before I call the cops.. She answers that I dont understand what its like to have kids. Couldve gotten them taken away. If Im worried about hogman, I should move out or buy a gun like she has. OR go to the court house, wait 8 hours, pay $40 and get restraining order.
My point of view:
Im not spending MY money for a gun, order OR should I move out. I shouldnt have to worry about these problems. I pay my rent every month in full, on time, the apartment is immaculate. Weve had 0 problems with the landlord. This bitch moves in and in 8 days Ive called the landlord and the police because of the situation.
Needless to say this happened from 10pm - 11pm, we were looking at buying a house at 11:15pm.
I called the landlord, but they are on vac in aruba until this sat night, sunday.
I dont think I should move because Ive been here 8 months now. We dont party here, we dont have shady baggage, we come in AFTER midnight maybe once in 2 months. The only loud thing I do is start my jeep, S2000, Bike or play XBOX360. But at 10pm, the home theatre doesnt get turned on and if its on, its turned off. I shouldnt have to worry like this about my gf being home alone or my things getting stolen.
Ill have to wait and see what happens with the landlord this sunday. I already talked to the husbands sister, she knows the situation and acknowledged the ridiculousness.
If I move out, I just want my full sec deposit and no fees to break the lease. I will pay a full months rent for that last month Im there.
What should I do?? I moved 10mins away from the "in town" area to save $150 a month on rent. Its not in the ghetto, but the ghetto is like 2 miles away. So ghetto things happen close to here.
Do I have to buy a house to ensure things like this dont happen? Even if they kick the woman upstairs out, whose moving in next?? I guess its either pay $650+ rent to live in town, or mortgage a house.. What can I do??
Were looking at forclosed homes and things like that..
Thanks guys, Im sorry for the epic length but it had to be to get the point across...

$650/mo. rent is expensive to you? where do you live?! we pay $945 for our little house and we thought that was a steal.
instead of talking to your landlord about YOU moving out... why don't you talk to the landlord about the problem people moving out? i'm sure they'd much rather have you as a tenant than ghetto mcgee upstairs.

yeah, I think Scot has a few vacancies - you or Hogman could move in...
You can just keep calling the cops until the lady upstairs gets fed up and leaves, or you can probably talk the landlord into giving you back your sec. deposit and moving out. Fwiw, always rent the top floor.

I live in Pittsburgh PA.. Our real estate isnt insane here. Thats why our rent was $770 a month for 600 square feet.
I went to $450 a month for 2000 square feet and a ghetto neighbor I guess..
Thats what I ment, Im going to talk to them about her moving out first. Before I spend my money and time. The thing is, whose going to move in there next? I guess I should chance it and then deal with it when it gets here...
I figured there would be alot of "scots" tenants remarks.
Please dont talk down to me as if I belong in one of Scots tenant buildings. I come from a wealthy family. I wasnt brought up in a screaming drunken home.. With people at 45yrs old floating from house to house exploring different bars every night leaving their kids at home.
Im making it all on my own, I guess Im just learning the bad sides of cheap rent...

I'm with Raptor. . .
here's the deal. . . for as much of a human trainwreck as your downstairs neighbor is, he pays his rent and thusly, is allowed to stay.
In business, you have to vote with your dollar. Vote actively.
I can understand you being worried about the future tenents, but as far as I'm concerned, your only ethical obligation is to tell your landlord why you're moving, and why you're demanding pro-rated rent back.

^^ ahahahahahaha! Thanks for the laugh. "demanding pro-rated rent back" oh man, that's a good one!
Seriously, you aren't getting anything from your landlord but a security deposit, and that only if you either got a lawyer or the only landlord in recorded history that gives back money without a court order. And only if you give 60 days notice.
There is more than one reason rent is more expensive for less space in some neighborhoods. You can either find out what that reason is, or learn to live in the situation you currently have. Your upstairs neighbor's kids need to learn what happens when they raise hell outside someone's door. Smart people call the cops, and it sounds lke they were raised by people who don't call the cops very often.
It's hard to say without actually being there, but I'd probbly take my chances on the next tenants. Just don't be a dick to your upstairs neighbors, and fel free to call the cops if you see Pigboy hanging around. You don't have to go outside and confront anyone, and in most communities they track the number of times the police are called to a rental unit. The landlord can have his rental license yanked, suddenly have housing inspectors at his properties every day, any number of things to pressure him to improve the caliber of tenants.
If you explain the problem to the landlord in writing, he's more likely to ask your upstairs neighbors to leave than sit on his hands. If nothing improves, chalk it up to experience and find a new place in a quiet neighborhood. Right now you have a screaming deal, for a reason. Try and be aware of the trade-offs that come with cheap rent when you are looking for your next place.
