A long, but interesting read from /.

The latest media-transmitted meme about technology and the Net is that the tech world is in the midst of a slump. This is true only if you define technology's overall status by dotcom stock prices. If the dotcom era is really over, good riddance. Maybe we can forget about venture capitalists, copyright and lawsuits for a bit. Some of the tech world's most interesting innovations -- from mom and pop online retailing to countless individual web pages to file-sharing to Freenet to P2P programs, AI to gene mapping -- have been developed far from venture capital cash.

Try explaining the lack of a "slump" to the thousands of people who've been laid off over the past few days from the tech industry. )-:

All we need for there to be a slump is for people to believe there is one...

I hate marketing buzzhypes. The whole thing with "B2B is dead" and everything soars downwards. I really distrust marketing people. Then again, I work for a company that is headed by marketing people that do not understand software development.
