That would have scared the crap out of me. We go visit my wife's family in Hawaii every January and I have gotten very close to them (close enough to jump on one basically) in Zodiac rafts and they are pretty docile and HUGE. The only time I have heard of any aggression is from the bulls during mating season which is around March.
If you ever want to see a bunch, Hawaii is ugly with em from late December through March. Lots of em. Maui is probably and the big island are great for it.
