Take responsibility and pay the man.

Thanks everyone for your comments good and bad i appreciate it. I know i was more wrong than i thought and this helped open my eyes. To take up for myself a bit to everyone calling me childish. i admit my decision was not thought out and me trying to rationalize was wrong, but can any of you say that you've never made mistakes before. I was on a july 4 trip, i just got there, the sun was out and we were all ready to have a great time for the week. Like i said it was spur of the moment and i just made a bad, fast choice because of the excitement. If I were at home i probably would've never gotten on a bike, much less a 1000cc, but i got caught up in the moment. So please cut me some slack. I admit i was wrong for doing what i did but i didn't post this to be a flame story. People try new things and fail at them all the time and being in the moment can make people do stupid things, and i don't think anyone on this site is at all perfect, maybe your mistakes are less extreme than mine, but we all make mistakes. Im a 20 year old college kid. I love cars and fast things alike. Isn't it easy to see how something like this bike could entice a person who doesn't understand it's power. Especially when they're on vacation free from the stress of college life and work just trying to have fun.

Get the bike fixed, be thankful things didn't end as badly as they could, appreciate your recovery, and move on.
My instinct is that you were aware, at the minimum, that you at least knew that you didn't know what you were getting yourself into. You did know the motorcycle was a fairly expensive piece of machinery and fragile in the sense that if you were to drop it or let it hit the ground it would cause substantial damage.
You should pay for the damage. But your "friend" is a dick.

about two months ago i barrowed by friends R1.... hit 130 on it and after half an hour of riding i hit a curb on a turn and rolled for about 100 feet, i was going 110. i can't blame him because he didn't tell me that you had to force that massive thing to lean in on a tight turn. paid 1700 and spend 3 days in the hospital. money paid, lesson learned. never rode a bike either and he had it set up for racing, short a$$ clutch and goes all out with just a touch.
If I remember correctly, there was a similar case on Judge Judy (my wife watches), and the owner of the bike was responsible for the damages.
If the owner of the bike knew the OP had never operated a motorcycle before, they had to also be aware that this was a risk of their allowing them to drive it. The OP may only be responsible if they had operated it without the owner's knowledge or consent.
Letting others use your stuff in high risk situation does not automatically transfer risk away from you. It is your stuff after all, and if you want to put it in situations where it will most likely be damaged, that is your choice.
That being said, since it's a friend, I'd pay for the damage. And I'm no attorney so I'm not giving legal advice.

Just pay the man.
