Need advice
What if you lent me your car and I hit a curb (parking) damaging your front bumper. Is it safe to say that I can walk away from that because you didn't tell me your car is lowered (or lower than the curb)?
I would pay up if I destroyed something borrowed. Just talk to him and see what he wants to do or what is fair. He's your good buddy afterall.

Should I hold McDonalds accountable for my weight even though they don't force me to eat that sh&t?
Take responsibility and pay the man.

But yes.. you play, you pay.
There's a lot of constructive criticism in here, which is a good thing (not a flaming thing).
Legally-it's how good your lawyer is.
This shouldn't even be discussed, in-the-moment-stupidity on both sides doesn't make one more right then the other. Pay the man because it's the responsible, human thing to do. Don't pay the man if you are one of the many who don't care about morality.

There's legally, and then there's ethically.
LEGALLY, yes, the bike owner probably owns the responsibility.
However, anyone who's not a piece of shit would pay for the bike. It's your f-up, and your problem to fix. Just like if I crash my buddy's car, yeah, his insurance will cover it, but I'm going to pay him his deductable at MINIMUM because it was my fault.
How much $$ are we talking here? Gotta be less than a couple grand, right? Give the dude $500/mo for the next few months, or SOMETHING.
Edit: Charliec, I'm agreeing with most of you, just addressing the legalese part. Didn't want you to think I was arguing with your post.

Your parents failed at raising a responsible adult. And by what you have said about your family saying your not at faulty I assume they themselves aren't responsible adults.
I dont care what these idiots say to try and justify your negligence. You were to stupid to realize you have no idea how to operate the type of vehicle. You are the one that is responsible to gauge whether or not you know what the hell you are doing. If i'm your friend and I tell you that you can ride my bike, I assume that if you say yes you have gauged that your abilities are sufficient enough to do it safely. I wouldn't assume that your going to wing it and see if you kill yourself or not.
You obviously haven't developed the part of your brain that has the survival instincts.
