need advice on a digital camera
You can get sd/cf 1GB cards for $50 all day long. And believe me, you easily can use up that memory ESPECIALLY with a 5mp camera. Unless you're taking your pics at the default 640 x480. Setting your camera to Fine, will easily eat up memory. Add to that the fact that P&S cams are more and more being used to capture video, you can see where the need for more memory comes into play.
ONce again, I'll reiterate that xD is the LEAST popular memory format. Only Olympus and Fuji use them. Consequently these two manf are on the lower end in terms of popular digicams. There's something to be said of purchasing products that have a large user installed base.
I'm done arguing the virtues of SD/CF versus the severe limitations of xD. If you're happy with xD, then good for you. However note, many more people are foregoing xD for the exact reasons I've stated.

where? Link, please. And you can fit between 400 5MP Fine images on a 1 gig card. Sorry, it'll take a while to "eat up" that kind of space, with just a 5MP camera.
As far as "least popular," so what? Fuji and Olympus use it, which is two of the what, 5 or 6 top P&S camera makers? How does the format's "popularity" affect its usefulness, again? It sure doesn't impair the availability or cost of the cards.
And not "many" are telling people to avoid XD cameras because of some perceived short-comings of the XD format, because there aren't any. I thought there was something behind your statements, but it turns out, there isn't. Go ahead and be afraid of XD cards - just stop making things up.
My only advice is to not buy Sony. I have had two of them, they have both sucked and I can not wait until I have the extra cash to buy something better...and I will research it extensively before purchase.

If you want to talk about who's bright, why do you believe the only criteria that matters in a camera is memory format?
heheh...you crack me up kid. Newegg and Amazon are both highly respectable vendors. And yes, you can get them at Shit Buy, Circuit Sucky, and CHumpUSA when they're on sale every other week.
It's all good man. You like xD, I'm cool with that. Just offering my opinion on the format. I don't think I made anything up, I stated all facts, but whatever. Arguing abt this anymore is just retarded.

If you can find it, Canon's S410 (I own this camera) is phenominal for the money. Takes an absolutely spectacular picture, is small, and is relatively easy to use. It uses Compact Flash memory which is very cheap too. This camera (if you can find it as the S-series was replaced by the SD-series) will be around $200. You won't find a better compact camera under $200
Canon A520 is an excellent camera for around $160 leaving some money to buy a memory card (SD format).
