Default need advice/help for shoplifting arrest

I have a friend who was arrested for stealing some electronics equipment from a major dept. store. He is 20 and this is his first arrest for doing something like this (he's done it before, but never got caught). The cops arrested him and put him in jail, until some other friends bailed him out.

I am wondering if anyone can help me out with what happens next, going to court and all that mess, and what kind of a sentence he might get, etc.

maybe there are some websites that talk about this stuff. Oh, this happened in california.

Thanks guys!

Um, your "friend" should get a lawyer. First offence, he should be able to plead out with payback for the losses and community service.

(Im no lawyer and that was not legal advice, but Im pretty sure it wasnt illegal advice.)

One of my good friends is a public defender in Orange County, I could ask him, but I would need to know the actual charges that are being filed, such as Grand theft or petty theft, or any other charges being filed.

If you want, you can PM me.

Damn, grand theft. That's pretty serious. He must've stolen stuff that was worth over $5000.

I spoke to my friend, he said he needs to know how many counts and what the code sections are that he is charged with.

'grand theft' ? Isn't that one step away from 'the chair'?

Funny how a petty crime becomes 'grand theft'. Geez...
