Thumbs up Need opinion from Tech people

So I'm doing a project right now for one of my classes and would like some opinion as to how Google will make money, or enhance their services in future with Google Street View.

I wanted to ask opinions from people since this thing is fairly new and there are still a lot of uncertainties as to what can be done in future with Street View.

The first thing that came to my mind was using it for GPS system. By visually allowing the driver to see the landscape, it should help the driver position where he is and when to turn significantly. In fact I believe recent debut of Motorola droid has this feature and the announcement of this caused TomTom and Garmin's shares to go down. However my question was that because Google generates most of its revenue from AdSense, how will they make money with Street View? The GPS software on phone they are releasing is for free also.

I'm just asking for any creative ideas out there regarding how Google can increase their services or generate revenue with Google Street View.

Thanks a lot for your ideas!

The thing I hate about Google's Street View is that, by the time I get there, all of the parked cars have moved and new cars are parked there; it never looks like the picture.

I think some of their products have no revenue model as of yet. Google maps is offered free to consumers to intially grab massive market share. Following that up they can add any number of revenue models, in the case of maps it will be paid on map listings, licensing the map content to third party devices for a small cost in the future (as opposed to free), google ads next to maps which get users to click, and simply taking yellow pages market share (charging businesses for featured listings).

Howard is half right. Many of the apps are to actually generate traffic and create the marketspace.

Most (90%+) of everything you do on Google generates a statistical trail that Google then uses to sell advertising.

Did you know that 9/10 people in Chile love alpacas and speak Spanish?* That sort of market research is generated by Google through many of their apps.

*That's obviously a really broad example. Google's info can become more granular, and is mostly based on search criteria.
