Nice Tag. I like the Monaco as well. brent_strong, check out IWC watches, they are generally considered to be a step up from Rolex but are low key. Colin Powell used to wear one.
J.
He did and I agree. IWC is in the upper echelon in terms of watch brands, much more prestigous than Rolex among hardcore watch enthusiasts. I think Rolex is overhyped and overmarketed.
a patek or a jaeger le-coultre is also seen as up in the higher tier, but would would you own one?
it's like that comment ben affleck said on the jay leno show "oh, everyone has a ferrari" and jay responds back "no, not everyone has a ferrari".
it's all relative, rolexes aren't overhyped and overmarketed, they aren't for the common man. all exclusive timepieces are just that, exclusive. not everybody can afford to wear or own one.
it's quite funny how you're just dismissing it as if it's a timex. a bit of perspective please.

I also agree that Rolex watches are as common and available as Timex watches (as are TAGs for that matter). And it is all relative, particularly in large cities that influence fashion and hype (e.g., Los Angeles, New York, Miami, etc).
Rolex watches are excellently built. Sturdy. They hold their value. And they are as easily recognized as a Timex watches due to their omnipresence in billboard and magazine ads, hence the degradation of their exclusivity. Then again, this is in Los Angeles and it may differ other regions.
There are other barometers that can be used to measure hype: the Chinese. More specifically, if there are Chinese knock-offs of a particular product then you can reliably assume the following: a) there is enough demand for it to be replicated, b) it is a status symbol. Both attributes of something hyped and well-marketed. And lastly, it also means that it would not be unreasonable to be worn by the common person.
Your Ferrari case is well-taken. But there is significant difference. People considered part of the mid-to-high socioeconomic class can equally pull off wearing a Rolex. No one will blink. The same is not true for Ferraris. If I pull into work with a Ferrari, it would be totally out of place. (Then again, if I had a Ferrari, I probably wouldn't be working).
Back to replicas, when I pass by replica-watch vendors (on my way to get gyros for lunch), the largest inventory tends to be Rolex watches. Second is TAG. And then spatterings of Gucci, Cartier and others. Sure, there are also IWC knockoffs, but no where as many as Rolex.
So if a watch is considered exclusive, I would consider it a) relatively unknown to the common passerby, and b) not in enough demand to justify replicating.

Bad analogy. Any common man making $45K per year can afford a Rolex. No common man making $45K per year can afford a Ferrari. In Miami, everyone has a Rolex but only millionaires drive Ferrari's to South Beach. I'm sure its the same in any major metropolitan area.
I would say that Rolex is more like Mercedes-Benz, simply because they have that brand recognition, a terrific (but more or less contemporary) product, and were at one time visionaries and innovators within their respective industries.
If you take a bum in central park, take a yuppy in Beijing, they'd both instantly recognize a Rolex and an MB.
