Serie A play suspended after fan violence on Friday
Rome, Italy (Sports Network) - The Italian soccer federation has postponed all league matches this weekend following a serious riot at Friday's match between Catania and Palermo that included the death of a police officer.
Fans rioted outside of Catania's Angelo Massimino stadium during the second half. This prompted police to fire tear gas, which made its way into the stadium and forced the match to be halted in the 58th minute. Play continued but the violence outside of the stadium did as well, and after the match, authorities trapped hundreds of fans inside the stadium to avoid further incident. According to police, the officer was killed after an explosive device was thrown inside his vehicle.
Federation commissioner Luca Pancalli then called an emergency meeting in Rome late Friday and announced that he was canceling all games.
"The decision to block the championships was immediate," Pancalli said in a news conference after the meeting. "We cannot continue like this. What we're witnessing has nothing to do with soccer, therefore Italian soccer is stopping."
Pancalli went on to say that the decision to postpone the weekend's remaining games was not enough, and that more meetings would take place on Monday "to identify those drastic measures that will allow us to restart. Otherwise, we're not restarting the games."
Police said that another officer was in critical condition and that dozens of people with lesser injuries had been taken to local hospitals.
In addition to this weekend's Serie A matches being postponed, the federation has canceled Italy's Under-21 friendly with Belgium on Tuesday, and Wednesday's friendly between Romania and the Italian National Team.
