What's a dictionary? Seriously, we americans should abide by our own folk saying "if you can't take the heat, stay out of the kitchen"
Are turkeys native to Oz?
El Tianti,
Alexander Graham Bell can be claimed by the Canadians as much as the uS (although he did do his most important work in the US)
Most folks credit James Watt with the steam engine- he advanced Savery's Work
Sunchild,
As an American with about half of my heritage coming from Scots who emigrated to the Cape Fear River valley during the highland clearances (mid-late 18th century) I am appalled by your failure to include the work of James Clerk Maxwell (Physics-electricity and magnetism- which laid the foundation for quantum theory, and kinetic flow of gases) and Isaac Newton- without which we wouldn't understand enough about force to drive our cars
Jay Li,
The Japanese in the late 20th century were to American basic science what Americans were to Britrtish basic science a generation earlier- Brits developed things like Radar and made important advances in Jet Engines, only to see American industry make them workable- Sony, etc took American basic scientific and engineering advances (transitors, integrated circuits, supercomputers) and made them better and more efficiently

Supercomputers? Are you serious? Was it a Japanese company that built deep blue? The Japanese can't hold a candle to what America and Americans have done in the field of computers and electronics.
The Japanese make nice TVs, VCRs and sports cars(!) but the next century (like the last) belongs to the country with the freest economy and the most productive, inventive and entrepreneurial work force. The plain fact is, no matter where you are in the world, if you have a good idea; you get on a airplane and come to America. No other country has greater legal support for intellectual property rights.
I will leave subject of software without comment, too easy.
Hey we invented the rotary lawnmower and clothes line (must be some fetish with things that go round)
. Seriously though I'm not going to go into a petty list of important things invented by Australians. Let's just say it's relatively long compared with our population.
Nobody doubts the greatness of the USA or its contribution to modern technology. Its achievements are immense, but to suggest that other countries are inferior just sounds ignorant and parochial.
One thing that should be noted is that while Silicon Valley is undoubtedly the home of "high tech" in the western world (yes, Japan does compete - open up any piece of CE gear and check the logos) a great number of the engineers who work there are from other countries, particularly the Indian subcontinent and China/Taiwan.
What's more, a lot of "American" technologies were not developed locally. Case in point, "Dolby Headphone" (http://www.dolby.com/dolbyheadphone), sold as American technology, but invented by, well, me

El Tiante,
I am a proud American(sorry for the amerocentric discussion others)- just commenting on Jay's remarks. Fact is, we don't compete with the Japanese when it comes to automobiles, despite having something like 90% of world production in 1950. The IC was develpoed here, and for awhile in the late 80s and early 90s we were lucky our chipmakers survived. Texas Instruments, whom you referred to above, almost went out of business. TVs- we don't make them anymore, despite the fact that TV grew up in the US, as did ICs, but the Japanese did a better job at manufacture and quality control. The supercomputer situationlooked very grim for while- remember Cray? They filed for relief from Misubishi (which was likely dumping for market share). I was drawing an analogy to how US manufacturers took British technological advances and marketed them (some like AJP Tyalor, thought that the British class system with it's distaste for entraupeneurship and "new" money, prevented them for taking advantage of British assets in economic endeavor). I don't disagree with your basic premise that the US education, research, and economic infrastructure do amazing things
