hahah, norcal is short for southern Oregon people who use "hella" or "wicked" (boston) need to ge flogged.

 

I'm with you. I lived up there for a year thinking that I wanted something different from the L.A/O.C. flavor. Needless to say I'm back down here after a year. The cultures between the two are really different. I don't mean in-your-face different, but it's subtle.

"HELLA this" and "HELLA that" is really fvcking annoying. Shut the HELL up!

And as far as THE 5 and THE 101, you're suppose to include that word. It's short for "take THE 5 freeway....exit THE 101 freeway."

If you come up to me after I ask for direction and tell me to simply "take 5," I'd be inclined to have a seat and take a 5-minute coffee break!

And as far as the "i don't know" on every other sentence...well, I'm sorry to say but you have to take it literally. There are just stupid people in L.A.-- same as any other place. At least around here, people have the decency to admit it outright while they're talking to you!

Since we're on the topic of verbal mannerisms, another So Cal one is "PCH". It's never Highway 1, or The 1, it's always PCH.

Why all the hate? it's pretty funny, cuz I've gone over a couple of these things with my wife and some of my friends, who are from SD and LA(but obviously like it hella more up here).

it's just the difference between mentality/culture. Obviously socal people like to think that the world should be as THEY know it, and anything else is "like... hella crazy." Then they start a poll... bashing one side of the state vs the other etc, trying to gain support from the highly intellectual and factually based postings of the those on the internet.

As far as the freeways are concerned? It's the difference between intepreting "5" for "take THE 5" and "take Highway 5" as it is actually named.... "take THE Highway 5"? "take THE Interstate Highway 5"? makes little sense to me.

oh.. .and "take 5" and sitting down and having a coffee break? it's virtually the same thing traffic is so bad down there.

How bout the NY people... I always heard that there is a huge desparity in cultures over there

 

I grew up in DC and have been living in santa cruz for 3 years. no hellas here, just on the other side of the hill and thank god for that, I can't stand it. I was dating this girl that said hecka, i wanted to puke every time i heard it. needless to say i haven't seen her in a couple years.

as for socal: the 101, the 5. If you need to modify the number say "highway 101," which is its name, or "I-5," which is its name. Back east we'd call 495 the beltway, or I-95, *gasp*, I-95!!! holy shit, calling things by their names!! what a ing amazing concept!!!!

 

new york was easy, you call subway lines by the number or letter. Like one day the E train was closed at 51st so I took the 6 and walked across spring st.

There the real names are "The E Train" and "The 6 Train." I don't think they name highways "The Interstate 5" or "The 101 Highway" as you stated ash, I agree with you. It's simply "Interstate 5" and "Highway 101" you socal folks must be dyslexic and that leads to all sorts of problems.
