I don't understand this argument. Why not get a normal desktop and install OSX on it? You save money on the hardware and still get the OS you love so much.

A few months ago my sister bought an iMac and was showing it off. So to spite her I spent roughly 300 dollars building a hackintosh, learned a few things on the way too.

It's true, people who pay a premium for Apple products do so for the perceived prestige of the brand. And it's that much sweeter when you throw it back in their face for building it at 1/5th of the cost.

Dude, you can replicate the $1700 27-inch iMac for only $340? Send me your parts list, man - that'd be a heck of a deal! I really don't keep up with the motherboard, video card, etc. releases, and certainly don't know which ones are supported by OSX. My current machine, a laptop, has been giving me issues and I've been trying to figure out what I want to get to replace it. Having the option to run OSX if I felt like it would be cool.

You're making is seem much easier than it actually is. Yes you can just install it on most computers (regardless of "mac" or not) but good luck getting it stable. There are a few hackintosh forums and you need pretty specific hardware to get it running mostly stable. Regardless, it's never going to run as well as a real mac.

As someone who works with a firmware group, I can safely tell you this is most certainly true.

However, it is a complete PITA to sit there and debug copypasta hack drivers until the wee hours of the morning, especially when you can just hack around the drive FW to make the sumbitch go faster (and burn through drives like a mugg).

They are based off the same code with a few minor tweaks in windows 7 to make it a little quicker...nothing major has changed.
Deer God, another one. "Minor tweaks"? Yeah, changing the kernel is quite the "minor tweak".

I've also owned laptops from every major manufacturer and they all have fallen apart after a year or two of heavy use, not to mention dealing with the shitty OS.
Haha, the cooling fans in my Lenovo Thinkpad just stopped working this week; computer is 16 months old. Build quality among PCs, even Thinkpads, which I consider the best of the breed, is not close to Mac build quality imo.

The people that deride Macs are typically Tech-experts that think nothing of doing just this and don't look beyond cost when choosing a computer. Just like people that think nothing of driving a Toyota Yaris because its cheap and take no joy from the act of actually driving.
