Where are you going and who told you an International Permit was necessary?
AAA will sell you one no matter what, but you may find you just don't need it, or that it's useless and you have to pay for a driving permit when you arrive at the airport in some countries.

There's nothing to it, but your US license is good in most countries. If you really need one, you can get it at your local AAA office.

Just find your local AAA office and call them. They usually need two passport-size photos and will charge you $15 or so for the permit. I think you also have to buy it not more than six months before your travel date.
Last time I got one all the languages of the countries that accept it were in there, so Thai should be covered.
WARNING: Don't buy one from someplace other than AAA or the National Automobile Club. Those are the only two organizations legally allowed to issue the IDL in the USA. There are plenty of Internet scam versions that could get you in trouble if you were pulled over in Thailand. Not that most things in Thailand can't be fixed with cash, but still...
