I still fail to see the big deal.

As a Hungarian/German american I am a honky, cracker, yakoo, you get the drift. When I travel to Hawaii with my wife, who is Japanese, around her family I am a Haole or "Howlie" a somewhat derogatory term used to refer to us put upon whiteys. My reaction? I have none. I could care less. People need to realize you can't get everyone to like you, you can't police other peoples thoughts, and your self worth is not determined by what a basketball team thinks of you.

I don't get why it is worth the energy. You see the picture, shake your head, and move on with your day.

We got black africans slaughtered by the tens of thousands in Darfur because they are not arabs and nobody gets worked up enough to start a thread. But a couple athletes act like second gradeers and the sky is falling. When Darfur is fixed, I will spend my left over ire on this display of silliness, but until then, there are bigger problems.

I agree that there are bigger problems in the world than race sensitivity. It seems that America is the place that broods intense PC racial sensitivity. We seem to care way way more about what some radio jock says about some black basketball players, or someone referring to some black kids in trees as monkeys (duh what else would you call them?), rather than to realize that there are way way more problems facing black people in the world than just what some random person might have said about them. I think there are tons of problems that blacks face in Africa in addition to genocide Darfur. Most of Africa is just a huge mess, revolution killings all the time, malaria claiming millions and millions of young lives, AIDS claiming millions of lives, hunger claiming millions of lives. Malaria and hunger is something we could easily make better, with more insectide treated nets and better food could easily save millions.

We should direct more of the America's righteous outrage energy there.

This is specious reasoning. This item with the Spanish Olympic team is a small one and will be forgotten tomorrow. No one will die over it. Darfur is a serious problem compounded by a racist regime in Sudan. People all over the world are protesting it, the UN has been addressing it, and all sorts of countries have been pressuring the government there. There are all sorts of attempts being made at aid. So, the problem with your reasoning is that 1) you are equating the response of the two to try to portray any objection to the Spanish team's action as being an over-reaction, and 2) implying that until Darfur is solved, we should take no action whatsoever - even the tiny discussion done here- on any lesser problem. That kind of reasoning is simply untenable. It is possible to object to both, and still keep a sense of proportion about the scope of these issues.

It's truly sad that so many on this site are so ignorant. But in life, there are all types aren't there?

I also think that sometimes people go too far with so-called political correctness. And that some people are much too sensitive. However, this incident was plain stupidity at it finest. What they did was laughably ignorant and racist.

Think about it this way, if the Spanish team had mocked the US team by adopting, lets say... apelike poses, do you think it would be any more acceptable?
1. It wasn't racist in any way. Look up the definition of racism
2. Making ape-like poses is a direct insult to blacks, who have had monkey comparisons made in the past (and currently I'm sure). Asians HAVE a different eye structure than non-asians. Black people AREN'T monkes. Subtle difference there...

If anything, it was stupid and in poor taste. There was no insinuation that Asians are inferior, worse, lesser or anything else derogatory. They simply were poking fun at their eyes. Considering Anime's obsession with westerner's eyes, I see it as fair game.

I thought that Americans have eyes in all shapes. What makes you think that all Americans are white guys like you?
