piloted a single engine plane today
I've been at the controls of a Cessna 180 several times I found it rather boring. At altitude there's very little sensation of speed. Most light aircraft have very little sound insulation so it's very, very loud in the cockpit. It's so loud that you need to wear head phones so that you can have a conversation.
To be fair, a Cessna 180 is pretty crappy for a plane. I've spent more time than I'd like in Cessna 180's, and not enough time in a Piper Warrior 2 (the only two small planes I've spent hours upon hours in.) The Cessna is like driving a 70's Civic. The Warrior 2 is closer to a classic WW2 fighter, by comparison (even if the Warrior doesn't actually outperform the Cessna by any measure).
If you are just flying level and straight, it should be boring. Banking turns can be fun, however. Seriously, doing anything at the controls of a small plane that can be described as "exciting" is pretty much a death wish, unless you have some training. But seeing the world that way, and just the flying itself, is pretty cool, IMHO. Quite a bit different than riding in a commercial jet.
