I have to disagree with your take on the ending. . . Given Tim Burton's style (and need to add shock value to an already known ending) he did the following. . .
Payed homage to the original by having Mark W. find his ship crashed on the planet (hence, realizing he's been thrown into the future). . . However, because this film did actually take place on earth, Tim burton still wanted to get the "shock value" of earth being run by apes. . . So, he did a "Twilight Zone" type ending. . .
