As long as you believe that this "14"yr. old kid is mature enough to handle the BB gun with care with a sense of responsibility than i don't see why not he shouldn't get one. What are his intentions with a bb gun? A paintball would be much more fun since he can go out in the open field and play with his friends rather than using a BB gun and injuring one another.
the plastic airsoft BB's shot by the guns described in this thread won't injure anyone when used with goggles/paintball mask. Especially the clear battery guns sold at Walmart. The BB's don't have enough mass, and the guns don't have enough power to generate the kind of force a steel BB gun can. A point-blank shot in the leg stings at worst.

Higher powered gas pistols/AEG/spring rifles versions can be somewhat dangerous, but still not near the kind of danger posed by a steel BB gun.

I would agree that responsibility is learned, not something you get by being protected from it. And someone who's parents let them be exposed to guns and explore that kind of play are less likely to romanticize or idealize a culture of guns. It comes across as kind of silly to someone who has grown up around them. Parents who struggle mightily to prevent their child from engaging in play behavior that mimics undesirable behavior (such as cops & robbers or military play) aren't allowing their child to explore different behaviors in a safe manner. A child that plays at cowboys and Indians is probably more likely to grasp the very real danger inherent in projectile weapons.

Having your child take a real gun safety course at 14 is probably a good way to handle their increasing interest in guns. At the very least, you can know they will be taught proper, safe ways to handle firearms, and this will allow them to find out a little about the objects of their fascination, removing some of the mystery and attraction.

Great points everyone, I think we will get the paintball goggles mentioned above and some of the clear lesser powered guns and go at it.

His mom is ok with it, which is a big step for her, but I may need to run it by his dad after reading some of the valid points everyone brought up.

I had a group of friends that I used to play airsoft games with during high school. (8 years ago) We all had Tokyo Marui electric rifles/smgs and gas powered handguns. It was a hell of a lot of fun. We split into teams and played on paintball fields, abandoned warehouses, forests at night, and backyard assaults. No one ever got seriously injured other than an occasional welt. It was a lot of fun while it lasted. If you can get a group of friends into it, I bet it would be fun because if not, it gets boring shooting targets.

Another link to look at would be http://www.dentrinity.com

Well I bought 2 guns, one battery powered electric one for me and a pistol for him. I went over all the features and saftey before we left the house. When we walked outside he informed me that the gun would not shoot. I inspected the gun, and the trigger just moved back and forth very limp like............I asked did you try shooting this with the saftey on and forcing it.......he replied, yea I think so.

I feel like Bill cosby talking about Theo......
