Please GOD make him stop!!!!!
I don't get it. Perhaps because I am 'caucasian". When some guy like Cato Kalin becomes a media celeb because he is the worlds biggest slacker doof and lives off cleaning OJ's pool, I don't think "Oh gosh another negative white stereotype." Or this chick who faked her abduction in Wisconsin, I don't think why are all these whities bringing my culture down? Geez, watch an episode of Jerry Springer and check out some of the white people who have a love triangle with there sister and mom.
True, there are stereotypes out there but I think people have to much of their own self image defined by them. By that I mean even if William might fit some negative stereotypes, that does not mean when you walk down the street that is the way other people see you. Other folks don't define you, you do. Sure there are some who see you as some negative stereotype, who cares? I walk down the street and I am short, goofy looking, bad hair, bowlegged doofus, blah blah blah. I still kind of like me, a couple other folks do too.
If you have ever read the autobiography of Malcolm X there is one thing that is a really strong theme that people miss. Malcolm was a straight A student, and one day the teacher was asking the kids what they wanted to be and Malcolm said "a lawyer". The teacher scoffed at his choice because he was black. Malcolm really expands on that and how that was when his life began to unravel because he believed the teacher. He quit concentrating on school, got bad grades, gave up, got into drugs, went to prison. He brings this up in the beginning of the book and at the end. He could have been a lawyer, he was really intelligent guy. He let someone tell him he could'nt, so he did'nt. It haunted him, but he let someone else define him. He looked into the mirror and saw what the teacher saw, a stereotype of a black guy that could not possibly become a lawyer.
I still think an asian person should not look in the mirror and see William Hung (even though I think he seems like a nice nerdy dude and can sing better than I can). If the point is that William is overexposed and should go away, it will happen soon enough, I tired of him in about ten minutes. Some look at him and see positives, engineering student, upbeat guy, brave as hell. He IS dorky, but I have always found dorks to be some of the best people to be around. My girlfriend is Japanese and I don't see her as William Hung or some negative stereotype, she is way HOTTER than that. Guys with GIAGANTICALLY HUGE wings and farty pipes on crappy little cars create more of a laughable stereotype than Hung does in my opionion.
And as far as positive media images, I have always been a huge Jackie Chan guy. But you are right, there aint too many besides say Jackie,Sulu from Star Trek, and Lucy Lu. MMMMmmmmmmmmmmm....Lucy Lu.

Guys Guys...
First off, I'm not jealous, envious nor getting my panties into a bunch over Hung's success. I got a really good laugh when I saw his clip initially and am guilty of forwarding it to some other friends. My beef is that Hung's playing into/supporting/endorsing the Asian stereotype the media wants you and I to believe. It's unfortunate that the stereotype is not one to be proud of. And it's even more unfortunate for them to have found Hung who in the eyes of many proves that Asians truly look the way they were portrayed in those movies... We're nerds, smelly, un-sexy... when will Jackie Chan or Chow Yun Fat get laid in a movie??? Back to the point. This is not something that the Asian communities are sensitive about either. I read sometime ago, I believe in the NYT, how the Italian community were not so proud of the show and specifically the cast of 'The Sopranos' that they banned them from appearing at the NY Columbus Day Parade? You think Indians liked to be stereotyped as convenient store operators, IT geeks, and taxi drivers? Understand too that I didn't go get an education, a well paying job then to have some walk past me singing 'She Bangs She Bangs...'
I now understand that every race, gender, religion wants to be portrayed in a positive light. Every one of these groups and communities are trying hard to create an identity but unfortunately the hate mongers and the ignorant out number us and the media is there to supply it. Don't take it so seriously it's just entertainment some might say... well, try telling my aunt and neighbor to not be so afraid of Africans and Hispanics after watching 'Cops', 'Bad Boys', 'Cheaters'... it's tough.
Finally to brother protokultur, yes, after some thought you are right. It is wrong for me to hate Hung yet accept stilladick. My guess is that the only reason why I accept stilladick is that he is not profiting from his actions and in some way helping expose those who think they're "all that" but it's still no excuse for me to promote it with a thread! My apologies

I believe this "Will Hung craze" does negatively reinforces the typical Asian-American sterotype. Case in point? Just the other day, when I walked into FootLocker the pimple-faced casher boy started to hmming "she bangs, she bangs" as soon as I walked into the store (yeah, I'm asian and I was the only asian in the store)....odd you might ask? I thought so too...but I'll never "know" for sure.
So you want to hate him for that? Fine. But, it's been my experience that, at the end of the day, it all "make sense" if you follow dollar sign
. No point on dwelling over it. I just chuckle and move on.
"stilladick" is different. I enjoyed his "offensive" writing for exposing some of the tacky-as* sh*ts some of us do to ourselves that I absolutely abhor and I genuinely agree with a lot of what he wrote, albeit a little offensive to some of our "sensitive" audiences

You guys are too hung up on this "media image". Normality is never protrayed by the media, just the extremes. You are either the top of the socially desired or the bottom. Getting bent over some guy making money making a fool of himself is a waste of time and it is NOTHING new and NOT limited to asians. Think Urkel or Skreetch.
What happens to Hung when he actually sings the song good? It's going to happen one day, just watch. BTW, It don't think Hung does a misrepresentation of Asians. If you listen to the guy he is very down to earth and speeks from the heart and that is his appeal.
