Please help me sell my 1969 VW Type III!
I want to sell my VW but I need some clever suggestions that aren't too expensive. First, some background about the car. It was built in Germany and then purchased by an U.S. A. Army Colonel. He brought it with him when he returned home and gave it to his daughter. She used it for a few years, mostly to get groceries and what not, as she was a homemaker. When she decided to get another, newer vehicle, she gave it to the gentleman who had done the routine maintenence for her. He is a huge Porsche and VW enthusiast so he was happy to take it off her hands. He kept the car in excellent condition, driving it a few times a month but mostly it sat in a garage under a car cover. He wanted to pick up some extra cash, just as I do now, and he put an ad in Auto Trader. My girlfriend, one who could care less about any aspect of a car other than the looks, decided she must have it. We took the two hour drive down to Rockport, an area by the Gulf of Mexico, to take a look. I was extremely concerned about it being rusted and deteriorated. Here's what we found when we arrived and he uncovered the car.
1969 Togo White VW Type III Squareback
Factory sun roof
Automatic transmission
Fuel injected
Red Leatherette interior
No rust, body, or interior damage.
Original spare tire from Germany
Original service records and papers
64,500 miles
He was asking $3,000 and, after seeing the look on my girlfriend's face, we decided to purchase it. The car then, and now, runs like a champ! I've replaced some minor things, just for security, with new, Bosch components. Namely, the voltage regulator, generator, spark plugs, spark plug wires, distributor cap, distributor rotor, and new points. Other than a battery from Wal Mart, everything is original and unchanged. It still has an air filter that uses an oil bath! The car is actually a lot of fun to drive, especially with the engine in the rear.
So, what do you think I should do? Just put an ad in Auto Trader and see what happens? Heck, it worked once before.
I'd really like to get about $3000 for it and I think that with the right selling technique, that wouldn't be too hard to reach. I'm not a VW guy, I'm a Honda guy, so I'm not really aware of the inner cirlcles of VW enthusiasts.
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. TIA.

Damn... well, I think I might put it in the Dupont Registry. It's not too expensive and it should get a pretty well-off audience. Maybe somebody with a little extra cash who had one in high school or college will be interested.
