A buddy of mine was an engineer on an oil rig back in the 60s right out of college. I don't recall exactly how much time he spend on the rig every year, but it wasn't very much. His salary was $60,000/year which was huge in that day, especially for the time spent, and considering he was a newbie.
Cops have to put up with a lot of BS and if you have little patience for bs from lowlifes, (like I do) you might find yourself beating the crap out of perps. Thats why cop aint for me. So ask yourself if you want to deal with all the crap.
But there are two kinds of people that become police officers. Nice people that want to protect and serve, and insecure pricks who want to carry a gun and push people around. Not saying that you are one of the latter, just that you will have to work with some.

99% boredom, 1% sheer panic. Also, most cops need to restrict themselves to cop-friendly friends. Gets a bit sticky if someone you know wants to smoke a little weed or you see them about drive after a few drinks, right?
i thought about being a cop. all u have to do is cruise around, make a few busts at the end of the month, and endure being called officer dick, pig, bacon, etc.
plus, u get to keep all the drugs u confiscate.
no education necessary and u get to to drive as fast as u want and u will always get out of a ticket.
other jobs that are easy and pay decently:
san fernando valley adult film star
stripper
security guard on a cruise ship
any government job that is completely unneccessary that a machine could easily do (toll booth worker)
dealer

most cops in the US sure as hell don't start at 55K.
Maybe in LA/NYC/SF, but 55K buys nothing there. In most of the country that is a HIGH salary. I think cops start out at 30K in most of the country.

24 hour on call for 7 weeks, then off for one week. Base pay is $2000/month + $350 per day for every day you're in the field. They say I'd average 20 days a month of work. Two weeks vacation.
That's $108,000/ year.
They want people with experience, but they simply CAN'T fill the positions fast enough. As you advance in the ranks your pay goes up, on call time comes down, off call time goes up, vacation goes up. If you have a family, then it's almost moot to even think about it.

without working a lot? low stress? there's a reason why field hands / techs and engineers are in demand: extraordinary turnover
A good friend of mine is an HVAC field engineer. He hates the hours, but the pay is good
